Join the Group

Our group at the Disaster Geoinformatics Laboratory, International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS), Tohoku University, is always seeking bright, motivated students and researchers to join. We work at the intersection of remote sensing, AI, and physics-based computer simulation for disaster science research.

PhD Students

Our group welcomes applications from prospective PhD students interested in earth observation, machine learning, or tsunami simulation. Strong candidates will have a background in remote sensing, geophysics, civil or environmental engineering, or computer science.

  • M.Eng./M.Sc. in a relevant field
  • Programming experience (Python, Fortran, or similar)
  • Strong motivation for research
  • English proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS or equivalent)

Postdoctoral Researchers

Our group occasionally has openings for postdoctoral researchers, particularly for funded projects. Candidates with experience in SAR processing, deep learning for remote sensing, or geophysical modeling are especially encouraged to reach out.

  • PhD in remote sensing, geophysics, or related field
  • Publication record in relevant journals
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Visiting Researchers

Our group welcomes visiting researchers from overseas institutions for short- and long-term stays. Visitors are encouraged to apply for fellowships, such as the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships, or for their home country's mobility programs.

  • Ongoing research relevant to group activities
  • Affiliation with a recognized institution
  • Minimum stay of 6 months (recommended)
How to apply: Please send an email to Bruno Adriano with (1) a brief statement of your research interests and how they align with the group's work, (2) your CV, and (3) representative publications or reports if available. Use the subject line "[Prospective Member] Your Name".
  • CCutting-edge research at one of Japan's leading disaster science institutes
  • Access to high-resolution satellite data (ALOS-2, Sentinel 1/2, commercial SAR)
  • HPC resources for large-scale simulation
  • International research environment and travel support
  • Mentorship and support for fellowship/grant applications
  • Location in Sendai — a vibrant, affordable, and internationally connected city
  • Proximity to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake/tsunami study area
  • Strong connections with international disaster science community (IDRC, WCDRR)
  • Support for Japanese language learning (optional)
  • Regular group meetings, seminars, and workshops

Several external funding opportunities are available for students and researchers wishing to join Tohoku University. I am happy to support strong applicants.

MEXT Scholarship (Japanese Government)

Full scholarship for international students at Japanese universities. Covers tuition, living expenses, and travel. Application through Japanese embassies or directly via the university.

JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship

For overseas researchers to conduct collaborative research in Japan. Short-term (up to 1 year) and standard (2 years) programs available.

Tohoku University Scholarship Programs

Various scholarships offered by Tohoku University for international students, including the International Civil and Environmental Engineering Course (I-CEEC).

Home Country Fellowships

Many countries offer outbound research fellowships (e.g., CSC/China, LPDP/Indonesia). We can provide an official letter of invitation to support your application.
